A deductible is the amount that you must pay out of pocket before any "real dollar" contributions from the insurance company are made towards your medical bills. However, in most instances where you have "Major Medical" coverage you will receive a "network discount" on all of your medical bills regardless of if you have satisfied your deductible or not. To find out more about how a "network discount" works please visit, "What is a network discount?"
(Note: Your deductible level is not as important as your "out-of-pocket maximum" when it comes to large medical bills. If you are not familiar with what an "out-of-pocket maximum" is please see "What is Coinsurance?", followed by "What is an Out-of-Pocket Maximum?"
